Statement: The Progressive Caucus calls on the European Commission to open mediation efforts after the violent and repressive response in Catalonia

In reaction to the terrible events, which took place in Catalonia last Sunday, Members of the steering committee of the Progressive Caucus in the European Parliament have expressed their deep condemnation and rejection of the repressive and disproportioned response of the Partido Popular government. The Spanish government instructed the National Police and the Guardia Civil to prevent the Catalan referendum vote to take place, which ended up in using of force against unarmed citizens resulting in 893 citizens in hospital.

The Catalan case needs to be dealt with through dialogue and mediation. We thus call on the European Commission to open a space of mediation for talks to be resumed between the Catalan Generalitat and the Spanish government in order to come to a negotiated solution.
